Instructor Spotlight: AUBREY BARTHOLOW




Meet Aubrey...


Q: What drew you to yoga?


A: Initially I was drawn by the fitness aspect of yoga, stretching and strengthening...but as I got into it more and more, I realized how much better I felt mentally and emotionally as well when I would show up for myself on my mat.


Q: At what point did you know yoga was a permanent part of your life?


A: I toyed with the idea of getting my teaching certification to add yoga benefits to my treatment sessions with my patients, and I’m not really sure if there was a direct realization that I’d become a yogi in my own right....yoga just became part of my daily life and routine as time went on. It’s always fascinated me, but it kind of just weaves its way into my every day, a good habit, just like washing your face or brushing your teeth. It’s a way of living, and of thinking.


Q: How has yoga helped you and when you started, did you realize that would be a benefit?


A: Yoga has helped me in many, many ways. First and foremost would be the connection with Self. Being more self aware in general. I’ve always been a very empathetic person, but it has taken a long journey of reflection and self discovery, with a lot of that coming from my practice, to realize I need to pay more attention to my own needs and to be true to who I am. I went through a few rough seasons in my life, things like an abusive and toxic relationship, losing loved ones by accident or illness....and yoga helped me work through a lot of the processing of those events in my life. It’s a journey, and some days are obviously harder than others, but the point of the matter is that yoga allows me to get in touch with ME and what’s going on in my head, my body, and with my spirit. It’s helped me to heal and move forward, and continues to do so every day.



Q: What is your favorite posture?


A: It really depends on the practice. I guess if I had to pick one, I would say Wheel or Bow pose....and of course Savasana!


Q: How often do you practice?


A: I incorporate yoga into my life daily, including breathwork, meditation, and asanas. Even if it’s only a few minutes here or there some days, it’s always part of my day.


Q: What is your least favorite posture?


A: I would say Warrior One. I am sure there is a reason that I haven’t quite figured out yet, but I dread that one. Especially with long holds. Ugh.


Q: What tip can you share for those starting out?


A: Try to approach yoga with a beginners mindset. Don’t compete with other people, it’s YOUR practice, and every body is different. Every day your mind and body will be on a different level, and it’s not always going to be great. Some days the hardest part is showing up for yourself. So just show up, give yourself that time, and let yourself be present in the moment. It’s not about how flexible you are with your body. It’s about taking care of YOU.


Q: What tip can you share for those growing their practice?


A: Never stop learning. Try a variety of instructors and classes. Different styles of yoga. Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone!


Q: What is your favorite color?


A: I tend to go with blues and greens. I love earthy colors. I don’t think I really have a favorite! I love a lot of different colors.


Q: What is your favorite food?


A: Homemade chili is probably my favorite. My husband and I love to cook together so we are always trying new recipes!


Q: Can you share your favorite recipe with us?


A: I love this quick recipe for get togethers or a quick and healthy snack!


Smoked Salmon, Avocado, & Cucumber Bites

Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Paleo, Whole 30 Friendly

Serves 12

Prep time: approx 10 minutes


Ingredients:

6 oz Smoked Salmon

1 medium sized cucumber

1 avocado

1 chives

1/2 TBsp lime juice

Sea salt and pepper to taste

*optional red pepper flakes if you want a little kick!


Directions:

Wash cucumber and slice into 1/4” thick round slices, discarding the ends. Lay cucumber slices flat on a platter and set aside. Thinly slice small pieces of salmon, set aside. Scoop avocado meat from the hull, discarding the hull and seed, and place it in a small bowl. Add lime juice, and a pinch of sea salt (to taste) to the avocado. Then, using a fork, smash the avocado until creamy. Assemble the bites by scooping a small amount of avocado into the cucumber slices. Then top the avocado with the salmon slices. Garnish with chives and black pepper (and red pepper flakes if desired). Serve immediately.


Q: Besides yoga, what do you enjoy doing?


A: I love dancing, cooking, laughing with friends and family, cuddles with my hubs and our dog, playing soccer and pickle ball, and being a Beach Body Coach!


Q: What makes BodyBLISS a unique place to teach/practice?


A: The studio feels like a second home to me. Jess, the studio owner, goes out of her way to make her students, clients, and staff feel welcome. One of the aspects that drew me to the studio in the first place was the “yoga is for EVERY BODY” mindset: meaning,

regardless of age, sex, race, and body type....yoga is for everyone! I also love that I can teach aerial yoga here!
